A Balanced Look at Childhood Experiences

Welcome!

This brief childhood experiences survey gathers information about early life experiences only. It does not assess mental health or draw conclusions about your well-being. If you have questions about well-being, or mental health, you may contact our clinic to speak with a licensed clinician.

What This Survey Looks At

Rather than focusing only on what was difficult, this survey takes a more complete view of childhood experiences. It combines two well-researched perspectives:

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): experiences that may have been painful, stressful, or overwhelming
  • Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs): experiences of safety, support, connection, and care

In research, childhood experiences are often examined across both challenging and supportive factors, without assuming outcomes for any individual. At the Center for Menโ€™s Excellence, we value understanding the full range of experiences people bring with them, while recognizing that no single framework explains mental health, resilience, or well-being.

When you complete the survey, you will see your experiences organized using four research-based groupings commonly used in population-level research (Flourishing, Languishing, Struggling, and Floundering). These groupings describe patterns in reported experiences and are not evaluations or assessments.
