Background, Education & Doctoral Research

His personal interest in men’s issues started during his career as a United States Navy diver and supervisor, as he experienced three deployments and life afterward in the often hyper-masculine culture of the US military. His doctoral research focused on the role of time, resilience, and social support on how non-combat military personnel readjust after deployment, making him a particularly good fit with clients experiencing challenges related to their experience in military service and with the transition to civilian life after the military.

His military career and his biracial Mexican-American heritage are two of the factors that have contributed to pursuing his doctorate in clinical psychology along with his passion for working with men and boys who are struggling.

Dr. Maris received his doctorate in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Diego upon the completion of his APA-accredited internship at Sharp Healthcare. Dr. Maris is a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Men’s Excellence supervised by Dr. Singley (CA license PSY20995).

Dr. Maris brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to his work, and in his free time, Dr. Maris is a pretend golfer, amateur cook, comic book consumer, gamer, and is ambivalent towards cats.
