Hello! I’m Dr. Jonathan Marquez, a new Staff Psychologist at The Center for Men’s Excellence. I’m delighted that I have the opportunity to work alongside such great clinicians and to be part of the CME team. My expertise in clinical psychology involves applying well-researched, evidence-based therapies, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in a collaborative working relationship with my patients. My specialties include individual and group therapy, psychological evaluations, and biofeedback. I primarily work with adults in group and individual therapy, with a particular emphasis on health psychology, men’s issues, perinatal/reproductive issues, and the transition to parenthood. My treatment approach consists of treating someone as a whole person, and not just their symptoms. I believe therapy consists of not only changing the way we think, but making important lifestyle changes, cultivating significant relationships, and gaining a deeper perspective of oneself in order to positively affect overall well-being.
I earned a master’s in Sport Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Health Psychology from Alliant International University in San Diego. While earning my doctorate, I also attained Board Certification in Biofeedback, which is a complimentary and alternative medicine treatment that helps to regulate the nervous system and works well when paired with other standard therapeutic modalities. In addition to multicultural and diversity issues, much of my research is focused on the mind-body connection and how one may translate those principles to everyday life.
My training and clinical experience in nationally renowned settings including hospital, academic, and community systems has prepared me to help clients from a variety of diverse backgrounds and presenting issues feel welcomed, understood, and comfortable in the therapeutic relationship. I integrate my training and expertise in optimal performance, psychophysiology, and clinical health psychology into my practice. Beyond using clinical assessment and judgment to develop a clear treatment plan tailored to a patient’s unique needs, a key pillar of my therapeutic approach is to foster an environment in which my patients feel willing to share openly and also push themselves to achieve their treatment goals. My role as a therapist is comparable to that of a GPS system and the clients as the drivers of the car – I guide them to where they want to go, and they push the pedals and steer the wheel. Clients learn practical and concrete skills which are delivered in a straight-forward, present-focused, and understandable way. I take a collaborative approach to help patients integrate newly learned skills into their daily lives, and then they are encouraged to practice and discuss feedback. Over time, clients may discover new patterns of thinking and behaving, helping them to feel more in control and better able to react to life stressors with insight and positivity.
I look forward to working with you, and welcome any questions you may have.
